The great pacific garbage patch is located between California and Hawaii, where it is known to be the largest accumulation of plastic. It is estimated that 1.15 to 2.4 million tons of plastics is entering the ocean each year and due to winds and currents these plastics from all over the world will travel to this location and the North Pacific gyre keeps them in its centre or vortex.
The mass of plastic is estimated about 80,000 tons and it covers a surface of approximately 1.6 million square meter which is three times the size of France. Because the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is so far from any country, no nation is taking the responsibility to try to clean it up or even fund the process. The guy who discovered this vortex, says any country who wants to clean this up, will go bankrupted.
